Skills For The Hills (2 Days)

This course is designed for those with limited or no experience of hill walking.  We’ll give you all the skills you need to hill walk safely in summer conditions. It’s ideal for novice walkers who want to explore upland areas, hills and mountain routes. With these skills you’ll acquire the confidence to tackle more challenging routes not only in the Lake District but also further afield.

Our instructors are fully qualified, very experienced and keen to ensure you have a great experience. Their aim is to equip you with the skills to walk and enjoy the hills with confidence and in safety. You’ll spend two full days ascending some of Lakeland’s best known hills.  Over the two day course we cover: personal equipment, map & compass and navigation skills, route choice, route finding, survival situations, emergency bivouacs, first aid kits, weather and forecasts and mountain hazards including: hypothermia, mountain terrain and lightning

Borrowdale YHA provides 4 star hostel accommodation and is located in the heart of Lakeland’s mountains with access to some of the best hill walking in the country.

Itinerary

Friday evening Arrive at Borrowdale YHA

Saturday 08:45 Meet instructor at hostel.
Introduction to the course and briefing for the day. Weather forecasts.
Depart for full day in the mountains. You will ascend one of the hills close to Borrowdale and learn navigation and survival skills en route.
17:00 Return to YHA. Afternoon tea, debrief and preparation for next day.
19:00 Evening Meal.

Sunday 08:45 Meet instructor at hostel.
Introduction to the day.
Depart for a day in the mountains. You will climb another of Lakeland’s famous hills and en route develop and build on the navigation, route finding and hill walking skills learnt on Saturday.
16:30 Return to YHA.
Afternoon tea and final debrief.

Please note: Hills climbed and final route choice will be determined by conditions prevailing on the day.
In the event of unsuitable weather conditions, we will not cancel the course but the itinerary may be amended or adapted.

What’s Included

The price includes two nights accommodation at Borrowdale YHA and all meals (including packed lunches and a free flask filling service) starting with breakfast on the Saturday morning and finishing with afternoon tea on Sunday. Please note that the evening meal on Friday is not included in the price but can be booked in advance and paid for on arrival if required.

All tuition and guiding by Summitreks team of fully qualified instructors.

A 15 % discount card for use in Summitreks Stores located in Ambleside, Coniston and Hawkshead is presented to all participants.

Please note that transport is not included in the price. Participants are expected to arrange their own transport to Borrowdale YHA and for the short journeys to access points for the days walking. It’s usual for car sharing to be arranged each day.
