ON THE ROCKS (2 Days)

This is a Rock Climbing course suitable for beginners to the sport and for those with some experience who want to improve their skills on multi-pitch routes. The course is also suitable for those with experience of hill walking who want to try more challenging mountaineering routes requiring knowledge of climbing techniques and using a rope. You’ll get expert tuition which will give the basic skills you need to climb in safety on classic rock climbing and mountaineering routes. In the Lake District we have some of the finest mountaineering terrain in the UK. It provides a near perfect environment for learning the skills you’ll need to climb, not only here in the Lakes, but also Scotland and further afield. We cover all the skills training you’ll need up to Intermediate level including: climbing techniques on rock and mixed ground, use of ropes and belay systems, grading of climbs, route choice, route finding, using guide books and mountain hazards.

They’re relaxed, friendly and very keen to ensure you have a great experience and get the most from the course. For the “On the Rocks” course you’ll be based at Helvellyn YHA. Helvellyn YHA is a true mountain hostel nestling under Sheffield Pike, at almost 1000ft above sea level. From here there’s easy access to Helvellyn’s famous high level ridges and scrambles. And, in the adjoining Grisedale Valley, we have some of the best rock climbing crags in the Lake District.

Itinerary

Friday evening Arrive at Helvellyn YHA

Saturday 08:45 Meet with instructor for briefing and equipment check
Weather forecasts. Depart for days climbing
A full day of climbing tuition on a local crag
17:00 Return to YHA. Afternoon tea and debrief
19:00 Evening Meal

Sunday 08:45 Meet with instructor for briefing on plan for the day
Depart for climbing day
A full day of climbing tuition on a local crag building and consolidating on skills learnt on Saturday
16:30 Return to YHA. Afternoon tea, final debrief and depart.

Please note: The plan for each day and final route choice will be determined by conditions prevailing on the day and the weather forecast. We will not cancel the course but the itinerary may be amended or adapted.

What’s Included

The price includes two nights accommodation at Helvellyn YHA and all meals (including packed lunches and a free flask filling service) starting with breakfast on the Saturday morning and finishing with afternoon tea on Sunday. Please note that the evening meal on Friday (19:00hrs) is not included in the price but can be booked in advance and paid for on arrival if required.

All technical equipment and tuition is by Summitreks team of fully qualified instructors.

A 15 % discount card for use in Summitreks Stores located in Ambleside, Coniston and Hawkshead is presented to all participants.

Please note that transport is not included in the price. Participants are expected to arrange their own transport to YHA Helvellyn and for the short journeys to the access points for the days walking/scrambling on Sunday. It’s usual for car sharing to be arranged.

Helvellyn YHA can be accessed by car and there is parking at the hostel.
