ON THE MOUNTAINS (5 Days)

For this holiday we’ve extended the three day On the Mountains break to give you the opportunity to enjoy even more of Lakeland’s mountain splendour with an extra two days of high level mountain walking. The Lake District has a well deserved reputation for having some of the most beautiful mountain landscapes you’ll find anywhere in the world. It also offers some of finest mountain walking such is the variety of terrain and choice of routes available to the hill walker. It’s a wonderful combination and the Summitreks team have put together a fantastic itinerary to give you the opportunity to see and experience the best of what Lakeland hill-walking has to offer.

Our walking group leaders will guide you on high level hill walks taking you to the summits of some of the highest and best known of the Lake District mountains. The routes have been carefully chosen to show you just why walking in Lakeland is such a wonderful, world class experience.

Our aim is to provide you with five high quality walking days in the heart of Lakeland when you’ll be guided by Summitreks own team of qualified walking group leaders. They are highly experienced, relaxed and very keen for you get the very most out this holiday. Summitreks is the largest independent provider of Adventure Activities in the Lake District. We’ve operated in Lakeland for 25 years delivering mountaineering courses, hill walking breaks and holidays. For our “On the Mountains” holiday you’ll be based at Helvellyn YHA. Helvellyn YHA is a true mountain hostel nestling under Sheffield Pike at almost 1000ft above sea level. From here there’s easy access to Helvellyn’s famous high level ridges and some of the best walking routes in the Lake District.

Sunday 08:45 Meet your walking guide at the hostel for briefing
Depart for hill walking day
Approach walk and climb Helvellyn via Castycam and Swirral Edge. Then a high level ridge walk over White Side, Raise and Stybarrow Dodd.
Descend via Green Side and Sticks Pass.
17:00 Return to YHA. Afternoon tea - discussion and preparation for next day.
19:00 Evening Meal.

Monday 08:45 Briefing for day by your walking guide
Depart for hill walking day
Approach walk and climb Striding Edge onto the flank of Helvellyn then over Nethermost Pike, Dollywaggon Pike and descend via The Tongue and Grisedale Valley.
17:00 Return to YHA. Afternoon tea - discussion and preparation for next day.
19:00 Evening Meal

Tuesday 0845 Briefing for day by your walking guide
Depart for hill walking day.
Approach walk and climb St Sunday Crag then Fairfield. Descend via Deepdale.
17:00 Return to YHA. Afternoon tea – discussion and preparation for next day.
19:00 Evening Meal

Wednesday 08:45 Briefing for the day by your walking guide.
Depart for hill walking day
Approach walk and climb High Street via Caudale Moor and Thornthwaite Crag. Descend via the Knott and Angle Tarn.
17:00 Return to YHA. Afternoon tea - discussion and preparation for next day
19:00 Evening Meal

Thursday 08:45 Briefing for day by your walking guide
Depart for hill walking day
Approach walk and climb Blencathra via Sharp Edge one the most challenging and exciting ridge walks in the Lake District. Descend via Hallsfell Ridge.
16:30 Return to YHA. Afternoon tea and depart.

Please note: The final route choice will be determined by factors such as the weather forecast. We will aim to complete the routes as described in the itinerary but it may be necessary to amend or adapt routes depending on prevailing conditions.

What’s Included

The price includes five nights accommodation at Helvellyn YHA and all meals (including packed lunches and a free flask filling service) starting with breakfast on the Sunday morning and finishing with afternoon tea on Thursday. Please note that evening meal on Saturday is not included in the price but can be booked in advance and paid for on arrival.

You will also receive a 15 % discount card for use in Summitreks Outdoor Stores located in Ambleside, Coniston, and Hawkshead.

Please note that transport is not included in the price. Participants are expected to provide their own transport to Helvellyn YHA and for the short journeys to access points the day’s walking. It’s usual for car sharing to be arranged.

Helvellyn YHA can be accessed by car with parking at the hostel.
