ON THE EDGE (2 Days)

This activity break is suitable for those with some hill walking experience who now wish to try more adventurous and challenging mountain routes. In the Lake District we have some of the finest mountaineering terrain in the UK and on the Helvellyn massif and surrounding ridges we have some of the very best mountain ridges and scrambling routes. This break provides the opportunity to explore these ridges and gain confidence on high ground as you learn the skills to scramble and climb in safety in exposed places. We cover all aspects of scrambling, both roped and unroped, including the ascent of a graded scrambling route.

All specialist equipment is provided and included in the price. Topics covered will include: scrambling techniques on rock and mixed ground, use of ropes to protect yourself and scrambling partners, weather forecasts, route choice, route finding and guide books.

For our “On the Edge” break you’ll be based at Helvellyn YHA. Helvellyn YHA is a true mountain hostel nestling under Sheffield Pike at almost 1000ft above sea level. From here there’s easy access to Helvellyn’s high level ridges and some of the best walking and scrambling in the Lake District.

Itinerary

Friday evening Arrive at Helvellyn YHA

Saturday 08:45 Meet with Summitreks instructor for briefing and equipment check.
Weather forecasts. Depart for days scrambling.
A full day of ridge walking and scrambling on Helvellyn
17:00 Return to Youth Hostel. Afternoon tea and debrief.
19:00 Evening Meal.

Sunday 08:45 Meet with instructor for briefing on plan for the day.
Depart for scrambling day.
Ascent of Pinnacle Ridge (Grade 3 scramble) consolidating and building on skills and techniques learnt on Saturday.
16:30 Return to Youth Hostel.
Afternoon tea and final debrief.

Please note: The plan for each day and final route choice will be determined by conditions prevailing on the day and the weather forecast. We will not cancel the course but the itinerary may be amended or adapted.

What’s Included

The price includes two nights accommodation at Helvellyn YHA and all meals (including packed lunches and a free flask filling service) starting with breakfast on the Saturday morning and finishing with afternoon tea on Sunday. Please note that the evening meal on Friday (19:00hrs) is not included in the price but can be booked in advance and paid for on arrival if required.

All technical equipment and tuition by Summitreks team of fully qualified instructors.

A 15 % discount card for use in Summitreks Stores located in Ambleside, Coniston and Hawkshead is presented to all participants.

Please note that transport is not included in the price. Participants are expected to arrange their own transport to YHA Helvellyn and for the short journeys to the access points for the days walking/scrambling on Sunday. It’s usual for car sharing to be arranged.

Helvellyn YHA can be accessed by car and there is parking at the hostel.
