Off The Beaten Trac (3 Days)

If you have a real sense of adventure and feel drawn to explore “off track” then this three day activity break is just what you’re looking for. The itinerary has been specifically designed and provides excellent preparation for walking and trekking in remote and mountainous areas both in the British Isles and further afield. Or, as pre training/preparation for Scrambling and Mountaineering courses.

Due to the way the itinerary is designed it is suitable for novice hill walkers as well as those with some experience. It’s an ideal way to learn essential skills which will grow your confidence on high ground and ensure that your own personal experiences, when you’re out there in the “great outdoors”, are rewarding, enjoyable but above all completed in safety.

Our aim is to provide high quality days in the Lake District mountains away from main routes and exploring some of the Lakeland’s classic ridge walks. Our instructor team will introduce you to all the key skills you need including: navigation, route choice and route finding, movement on easy scrambling terrain, assessing mountain hazards and emergency procedures. We’ve operated in Lakeland for 25 years delivering mountaineering courses, hill walking breaks and holidays. Our instructors are highly skilled and experts in providing safe, enjoyable days in the mountains. They’re relaxed, friendly and very keen to ensure you have a great experience. For our “Off the Beaten Track” course you’ll be based at Borrowdale YHA. Borrowdale YHA provides 4 star hostel accommodation and is located in the heart of the Lake District mountains.

Itinerary

Friday evening Arrive at Borrowdale YHA

Saturday 08:45 Meet instructor at hostel for briefing.
Depart for mountain day.
Approach walk and climb Great Gable – Scramble via Napes Needle to the summit or another route of similar standard.
17:00 Return to YHA. Afternoon tea , debrief and preparation for next day.
19:00 Evening Meal.

Sunday 08:45 Briefing by instructor.
Depart for a day in the mountains.
Approach walk and climb Cam Crag ridge, Glaramara and north ridge of Great End or route of similar standard.
16:30 Return to YHA. Afternoon tea, debrief and preparation for next day.
19:00 Evening Meal.

Monday 0845 Meet instructor at hostel for briefing.
Depart for a mountain day.
The ridges of Blencathra e.g. Hallsfell Ridge and Sharp Edge or another route of similar standard.
16.30 Return to Youth Hostel. Afternoon tea, final debrief and depart

Please note: The final route choice will be determined by conditions prevailing on the day and the weather forecast. We will not cancel the course but the itinerary may be amended or adapted.

What’s Included

The price includes three nights accommodation at Borrowdale YHA and all meals (including packed lunches and a free flask filling service) starting with breakfast on the Saturday morning and finishing with afternoon tea on Monday. Please note that the evening meal on Friday is not included in the price but can be booked in advance and paid for on arrival if required.

All tuition and guiding by Summitreks team of fully qualified instructors.

You will also receive a 15 % discount card for use in Summitreks Outdoor Stores located in Ambleside, Coniston, and Hawkshead.

Please note that transport is not included in the price. Participants are expected to provide their own transport to Borrowdale YHA and for the short journeys to access points for each day’s walking. It’s usual for car sharing to be arranged each day.
