Once again, Summitreks are putting on a program of Winter Skills Courses in the Lake District National Park, the premier location in England for outdoor winter activities, in conjunction with Youth Hostels Association.

Summitreks courses will give you the opportunity to extend your walking season, try a new activity or to improve existing skills, amid some of the most beautiful and dramatic scenery in this country. Based at Derwentwater Youth Hostel, these Winter Activity Breaks are directed by Ron Rutland who is a fully qualified outdoor education teacher and holder of the MLTB Summer and Winter Certificates, plus the Mountain Instructors Certificate, the top instructors award.

LAKE DISTRICT

WINTER HILLWALKING WEEKEND COURSE

Winter hillwalking can be much more rewarding than its summer counterpart.  Under expert tuition  you will walk in the high fells and learn ice axe, crampon, winter navigation and survival skills.

To take part it is advisable to have some summer hillwalking experience. 

This course is physically and technically less demanding than the winter mountaineering which will venture on to steeper terrain and include protection ropework systems.

This course syllabus includes the Bronze National Navigation Award for those who wish an assessment, can take place during the weekend.  Axes and crampons are provided if you do not have your own.

Dates for 2009:                    9-11 January, 23-25 January, 6-8 February, 20-22 February, 6-8 March

Price:     £159.00 per person

ITINERARY:

Friday                   
2030        Course introduction.  Equipment issue and check.                      

Discussion / axe and crampon fitting.  Correct clothing / equipment for Winter.  Briefing for Saturday.

Saturday               
0800        Breakfast

0900        Depart for practical day in the hills.  Topics covered; ice axe and crampon skills, self arrest, progression and step cutting technique, Winter Navigation techniques.

Return to Youth Hostel.

Evening meal

2000            Talk and discussion - Hypothermia and survival. Weather forecasts. Video - avalanches, causes and avoidance

Briefing for Sunday.

Sunday                  
0800        Breakfast

0900        Depart for practical day in the hills.  Consolidation of axe and crampon techniques.  Construction of snow shelter and survival techniques.  Avalanche detection and avoidance, cornice awareness, etc. Navigation practice - bad weather and white out techniques.

1630        Return to Youth Hostel      Afternoon tea.        Final debrief.

Award of Bronze Navigation.

In the event of unsuitable weather conditions, we will not cancel the course but the itinerary may be amended or adapted.             Minimum age 18 years.

WHAT'S INCLUDED?

The cost includes two night's accommodation at Derwentwater Youth Hostel and all meals (including packed lunches and a free flask filling service) starting with breakfast on the Saturday morning and finishing with afternoon tea on Sunday.  Please note that evening meal on Friday (7 pm) is NOT included in the price but may be booked in advance and paid for on arrival, if required.

Tuition by fully qualified instructors is included and is arranged by Summitreks, well known and respected providers of outdoor activities.  Loan of ice axe and crampons is included at no extra charge.

Transport is NOT provided.  Participants are expected to provide their own transport to the hostel and for the short journeys to the start of the walks or to share with other participants.

The weekend is designed for those who have summer hillwalking experience and who wish to venture onto steeper ground and complete a more arduous and technical weekend than the Winter Hillwalking.  Basic rope work and security techniques are covered along with ice axe and crampon skills.  This is not a climbing course.  Ice axes and crampons are provided.  The syllabus covers the Bronze National Navigation award.

Dates for 2008/2009:         12-14 December, 16-18 January, 30-01 February, 13-15 February, 27-01 March, 13-15 March

Price:     £159.00 per person

ITINERARY:

Friday                   
2030        Course introduction.  Equipment check and discussion/equipment for Winter Mountaineering.

Saturday               
0800        Breakfast

0900        Depart for practical mountain day.  A day covering axe and crampon skills including: self arrest, progression techniques, movement on steep ground - including various crampon techniques.  Rope deployment / security systems / basic belay and protection techniques.

1700            Return to Youth Hostel.

1900            Evening meal

2000            Talk and discussion.  Hypothermia and survival.  Weather forecasts. Video - avalanches, causes and avoidance.
