WINTER HILLWALKING WEEKEND COURSE
Hillwalking in Winter can be a highly rewarding activity but does bring with it the requirement to have knowledge of extra skills. This course is designed to cover the essential Winter skills. You will learn to use ice axe and crampons, navigate and deal with survival situations. This course is physically less demanding than Winter Mountaineering but also includes the Bronze Navigation syllabus with assessment for those who wish to complete it.
To take part it is advisable to have some Summer hillwalking experience.
Dates for 2008: 4-6 January, 25-27 January, 8-10 February, 22-24 February, 7-9 March
Price: £155.00 per person
ITINERARY:
Friday
2030 Course introduction. Equipment issue and check. Discussion / axe and crampon fitting. Correct clothing / equipment for Winter. Briefing for Saturday.
Saturday
0800 Breakfast
0900 Depart for practical day in the hills. Topics covered; ice axe and crampon skills, self arrest, progression and step cutting technique, Winter Navigation techniques.
1700 Return to Youth Hostel.
1900 Evening meal
2000 Talk and discussion - Hypothermia and survival. Weather forecasts. Video - avalanches, causes and avoidance. Briefing for Sunday.
Sunday
0800 Breakfast
0900 Depart for practical day in the hills. Consolidation of axe and crampon techniques. Construction of snow shelter and survival techniques. Avalanche detection and avoidance, cornice awareness, etc. Navigation practice - bad weather and white out techniques.
1630 Return to Youth Hostel Afternoon tea. Final debrief.
Award of Bronze Navigation.
In the event of unsuitable weather conditions, we will not cancel the course but the itinerary may be amended or adapted. Minimum age 18 years.
WHAT'S INCLUDED?
The cost includes two night's accommodation at Derwentwater Youth Hostel and all meals (including packed lunches and a free flask filling service) starting with breakfast on the Saturday morning and finishing with afternoon tea on Sunday. Please note that evening meal on Friday (7 pm) is NOT included in the price but may be booked in advance and paid for on arrival, if required.
Tuition by fully qualified instructors is included and is arranged by Summitreks, well known and respected providers of outdoor activities. Loan of ice axe and crampons is included at no extra charge.
Transport is NOT provided. Participants are expected to provide their own transport to the hostel and for the short journeys to the start of the walks or to share with other participants.

WINTER MOUNTAINEERING WEEKEND COURSE
2007/2008
A weekend in the Lakeland mountains which are ideal for either an introduction or consolidation of Winter skills. This course is more arduous and technical than its counterpart Winter Hillwalking and covers basic rope protection skills in addition to ice axe and crampon techniques. Navigation is undertaken to Bronze National Navigation Award standard. For those who wish, ssessment is possible with the award of a Bronze NNA certificate for successful participants. This is not a climbing course. Ice axes and crampons are provided.

0900 Depart for practical mountain day. A day covering axe and crampon skills including: self arrest, progression techniques, movement on steep ground - including various crampon techniques. Rope deployment / security systems / basic belay and protection techniques.
1700 Return to Youth Hostel.
1900 Evening meal
2000 Talk and discussion. Hypothermia and survival. Weather forecasts. Video - avalanches, causes and avoidance.
